We celebrated the National Day wholeheartedly, and the children discovered what being Romanian means: unity, tradition and pride.
Through games, stories and creative activities, they learned why this day matters and what Romania means to all of us. For a primary-school child, history does not settle on dates but on stories with people in them. A figure in a textbook stays a figure; the idea that several places, with different customs and different ways of speaking, came to be part of the same country, on the other hand, is something they can grasp and retell at home.
We talked about traditions and what links them, about the colours of the flag and about why one particular day stays in the calendar year after year. We dwelt on the part we consider most important: pride in belonging to a place does not need to be built against anyone else. Children pick up that nuance more easily than one might expect, provided it is put to them clearly.
