On 24 January 2024 it was 165 years since the Union of the Romanian Principalities.
The Union of the Romanian Principalities, also known as the Little Union, took place in 1859 under the rule of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza. Today at PlusKids we explored the history of that moment and discovered with the little ones what happened on 24 January 1859.
For a primary school child, history is the hardest subject of all — not because it is complicated but because it happens in a time they cannot measure. So we began with something concrete: how many years have passed, how many generations that means, who our great-great-grandparents were back then. Once the marker is in place, the rest of the story has something to hold on to.
We then told the story of Alexandru Ioan Cuza and of what it meant to unite two countries that spoke the same language. Children grasp the idea surprisingly well when it is brought into their world: two teams that play separately and lose, and together become a single, stronger one.
We put together engaging educational activities, and the day ended with questions worth answering at leisure. Together we build bridges towards knowledge and encourage our children's curiosity.
