The second week of Summer School began, and we set off on a journey into space.
The children "launched" in their imaginations aboard their own rocket and discovered together what there is in space, how rockets work, what the International Space Station is, which planets make up our solar system and how gravity works.
The hardest thing to grasp at their age is distance. So we did not stop at the figures but turned them into comparisons they can hold on to: how long a car journey to the Sun would take, how small the Earth would look beside Jupiter, how long an astronaut stays on the ISS. Numbers on a board are forgotten; comparisons are not.
The International Space Station raised the most practical questions — how do you sleep, how do you eat, what happens to water. These are exactly the right questions, because they start from what a child already knows about everyday life.
The exploration had only just begun, with a week full of experiments and discoveries still ahead.
