Autumn has arrived, and with it the days of harvest at PlusKids.
The children had an authentic experience: they made pickles, with plenty of enthusiasm and energy. It is the kind of activity you cannot improvise. The vegetables have to be washed and arranged, the jar has to be packed sensibly, and the result does not show that day but weeks later. A child used to things finishing within the hour discovers something else here: that some jobs are done once, properly, and then you wait.
Along the way they also picked up practical knowledge — why pickles are made in autumn, what the brine is for, and where the habit of laying in supplies for winter comes from. In an age when everything is available in the shop all year round, the link between season and food is no longer self-evident; it has to be learned.
And because autumn would not be complete without something good, we enjoyed a pumpkin pie together — a dessert made exactly for the season and for the end of a working day.
The PlusKids team was closer than ever, and the children discovered the magic of autumn along with its practical side.
