"Where there are bees, there is life and health" — with that thought we began the second week of the PlusKids Summer School 2022.
The theme of the week was bees: why they matter, pollination, the hive and bee products. It is one of those topics that look small and turn out to be enormous. You start from an insect the children mostly know as a reason to run out of the yard, and you end up at how food arrives on the table. Once you understand what pollination is, you also understand why the disappearance of bees would not be the bees' problem but ours.
We talked about how a hive is organised and about what each bee does — an example of teamwork more convincing than any conversation about cooperation, because there nobody chooses their role and yet everything works.
As always, we learned while having fun. At this age the two do not rule each other out; on the contrary, one supports the other.
