Ahoy, shipmates! The first week of the "PlusKids Summer School 2022" programme was about pirates: ships, maps, messages and hidden treasure.
We set off on the adventure young and old alike — and that is not just a phrase, because this theme has the rare advantage of working at every age at once. The little ones play, the older ones search, and the map keeps everybody inside the same story.
Hidden treasure is, in fact, an excellent pretext for a great deal of learning: to reach it you have to read a message, follow instructions in order, find your way in space and do some arithmetic. Nobody feels they are solving exercises, yet the exercises get solved. And if a step is skipped the route does not work out — a lesson in attention that nobody needs to teach.
We began the summer just as we like to: with a story that ties the days together and with children who look forward to the next day to find out what comes next.
