A full week: World Animal Day, Education Day and self-portraits

30 photos

We had a full week at PlusKids.

Tuesday was World Animal Day, a good occasion to remind ourselves how important it is to protect the environment, the flora and the fauna, and to save the forests and the waters. The children learned about forest animals and made a hedgehog. The craft is not merely decorative: to make an animal out of simple materials you first have to look at it closely and understand what makes it itself — with a hedgehog, the spines that are not an ornament but its only defence.

On Wednesday, for Education Day, we celebrated alongside our teachers with a few educational activities, and relaxed with popcorn, nachos and a film.

The children closed the week by learning that people are not all alike and that each of us is unique and wonderful in our own way. We discussed how to accept one another and how to build friendships without judging appearances. Then they studied themselves and made a self-portrait, working from half of their own face. That exercise does something a conversation alone cannot: a child drawing themselves looks carefully at their own features and discovers that "different" simply means "theirs". When all the pieces are set side by side, the conclusion draws itself.

The social skills the children build day by day at PlusKids help them grow up in a positive environment and settle more easily into life later on.
