In the preparatory class we set off on an integrated lesson inspired by the poppy. It sounds like a small topic — a field flower — but that is exactly what makes it work: it is a simple enough pretext to tie three different subjects together without the moves between them feeling forced.
In maths we practised counting, addition and subtraction, ordering numbers and recognising odd and even ones. Petals, seeds and stems became working material, and with them came attention to detail and logical thinking. For a child in the preparatory class, a number written on a worksheet and a number of petals counted with a finger are not the same thing — the second one stays.
In language work, the children broke words into syllables, counted the words in sentences and built statements from pictures. That is how they practise spoken and written expression, vocabulary and the ability to construct clear, complete sentences with a beginning and an end.
We also folded in environmental studies: the parts of the poppy plant, its life cycle and a few facts suited to their age. In this way the children made connections between pictures, words, numbers and the world outside — and those connections are, in fact, the whole point of the lesson.
