Our proposal for the third week was "Around the world": a week in which the children found out, in an enjoyable way, wonderful things about different countries.
We chose this format because geography is learned best in small, concrete pieces. To an eight-year-old, a country is not an area and a population but a flag they recognise, a food they have tasted, a building they have seen in a photograph. From these things you naturally reach the rest: where the country sits on the map, who its neighbours are, what language is spoken there.
That is how we enriched our knowledge in a natural way, as we like to put it — that is, without anyone feeling they had to learn anything. The children compared, asked questions, told each other what they already knew and added to it.
A week that leaves behind a less abstract map and a curiosity that does not stop with the last day.
