Art Week was an explosion of creativity and artistic joy.
On Wednesday we discovered the magic of geometric shapes with Piet Mondrian. The children created genuine works from lines, squares and primary colours. Mondrian is perhaps the most suitable artist for their age: his rules are so simple that any child can follow them, and the result, without exception, looks good. And when your own work looks good, the courage to try something else follows by itself.
On Thursday, Henri Matisse showed us that with scissors and paper alone you can tell visual stories full of feeling. The children's collages were lively and expressive. Beyond the artistic side, cutting has a very concrete benefit: it exercises exactly the hand muscles that neat handwriting later depends on.
On Friday we closed the week differently. We talked about sound, about traditional music and about the link between visual and sonic art — about rhythm, repetition and harmony, ideas that mean much the same thing in a painting as in a song. The little ones were fascinated and proud of their musical creation.
A week about inspiration, colour and free expression.
