In our third summer week we took inspiration from the great artists of the world and stepped boldly into the world of art.
On Monday the children discovered Van Gogh's universe, with his dancing stars and his sunflower fields full of feeling. We talked about his way of painting — in thick, visible strokes you can trace with a finger — and about how a painting can show not what you see but what you feel while looking. It is an idea surprisingly easy to accept at their age.
On Tuesday we entered Picasso's world, where shapes and colours showed us that we can look at things from a thousand perspectives. His portraits, which at first seem wrong, suddenly make sense once you understand that the artist drew the same face from the front and in profile at the same time. The children tried it too, and the results were as funny as they were bold.
The children create, experiment, learn to express themselves through art and, above all, have fun with imagination unbounded. Our artistic journey had only just begun.
