The year's first strawberries, from local growers

6 photos

Today we tasted strawberries from local growers. They were delicious, and we were already waiting for the cherries.

The first fruit of the year does something supermarket shelves have all but erased: it marks the passing of time. A child who tastes strawberries exactly when they ripen, and not in January, learns without any explanation that every fruit has its season and that the waiting is part of the flavour.

We also talked about who picked them and where they came from. We support local growers for a simple reason: the journey from garden to table is short enough to be told to children from beginning to end, and short enough for them to remember it.
