Today is the International Day of Peace.
"Let us teach our children about tolerance and mutual respect. Let us invest in the schools and teachers that will build a fair world. Let us fight for peace and defend it with all our might." — Ban Ki-moon, former Secretary-General of the United Nations.
Every year on 21 September we mark the International Day of Peace. In 1981 the UN General Assembly declared this a day of non-violence and worldwide ceasefire.
In primary school, peace is not discussed in terms of states and treaties but in terms children know: what you do when someone takes your toy, how you say you are upset without hitting, how two classmates who have not spoken for three days make up again. These are the same skills on a different scale — listening to the end, admitting your share of the blame, finding a solution both can live with.
That is why this day concerns us directly. Tolerance and mutual respect are not taught in a single lesson; they are practised in every small conflict that arises among a group of children — and there, an attentive adult can achieve more than any lecture.
