Today at PlusKids we travelled into the depths of the Earth, discovering its fascinating mysteries.
We marked Earth Day by learning why recycling and protecting the environment matter. But we started from the planet itself rather than from exhortations: what lies beneath our feet, how deep it goes, what we have never seen and probably never will. Children are used to looking upwards, towards space; the idea that the world continues downwards too, for kilometres, surprises them every time.
From there, the conversation about the environment follows naturally. A planet you have just discovered has layers, temperatures and a long history is easier to respect than one you are merely told to protect. We talked about recycling, about what happens to the things we throw away and about the small gestures that can be made daily, at school and at home.
Every step of the exploration brought a new lesson and a fine experience for our little explorers. And the conclusion of the day belonged to them: the future of the planet depends on them too.
