On Monday at the PlusKids Summer School we travelled back in time and enjoyed the games and traditions of childhood as it once was.
We built the "household's plenty" from grain, exactly as it was done at our grandparents' homes — a custom tied to abundance and to the harvest, which the children discovered with their hands rather than from a story. We talked about why cereals mattered so much in a village household and how hard a family worked for things we now simply take off a shelf.
Then we played the games of childhood past and discovered how much joy hides in simple activities. These are games with nothing in them: no screen, no pieces, no rules written down anywhere. All the more interesting, then, to see how quickly children take to them — because they ask for exactly what children like best: running, hiding, organising themselves and squabbling a little over the rules.
A day full of good cheer and nostalgia, which brought the children closer to village traditions and to their grandparents' real childhood.
