We held a craft workshop using the napkin technique, and the children did splendidly.
The napkin technique demands something children rarely practise: a light hand. The napkin tears if you press, creases if you hurry, and forgives no corrections. The result depends almost entirely on patience, and it shows: the pieces made slowly look visibly better than the ones made in a rush. It is one of the few activities in which the link between haste and outcome becomes obvious without anyone having to say it.
Then we played bingo and had great fun. Bingo puts quick number recognition and sustained attention to work without any child feeling they are doing exercises — and the wait before the last number is called holds a group together better than anything.
It was a workshop just before Easter, and the bunny had every reason to come. The PlusKids workshops carried on after the holiday, when enrolment for the summer school also opened.
