"Read me 100 stories": reading-aloud workshops

"Reading aloud gives children a voice!"

The PlusKids after school runs reading workshops as part of the "Read me 100 stories" project, a programme designed to encourage reading among children.

Reading aloud does several things at once, and none of them is obvious at a glance. The child reading aloud hears their own mistakes — the ones they skip silently without noticing. They are obliged to respect the punctuation, because otherwise the sentence sounds wrong, so the comma stops being a mark to be corrected and becomes a place to breathe. And above all they practise the courage to speak in front of others, which for many children is the hardest part.

The child listening is working too: following the thread, picturing the scene and waiting their turn.

The number in the project's title is no accident either. A hundred stories means a habit, not an event — a taste for reading is not formed by one well-chosen book but by repetition.
