First steps in geometry: shapes, lines and a new way of looking at the world

Our young geometry explorers took their first steps into the world of shapes and lines.

Geometry has a rare advantage in primary school maths: you can see it. A circle, a rectangle or a broken line does not have to be imagined, only recognised — and that is where the good part begins, when a child looks around and discovers that the window, the floor tiles, the bicycle wheel and the roof are in fact the very figures they have just been studying. The world stays the same, but the way you look at it changes.

We worked on recognising shapes, on the difference between straight and curved lines, and on how to describe them: how many sides, how many corners, what changes if you add one more. Mathematical vocabulary is built in exactly such moments, when the new word arrives together with the object that explains it.

We know how important the foundations laid in primary school are. A child who now understands what a side, an angle and a figure are will not have to memorise them a few years later, when they turn up inside far more serious problems.
