At PlusKids we like to turn learning into an adventure, and this week the adventure came with numbers.
Together we explored the world of comparing numbers. It sounds like a simple topic, but it is one of those where children quickly split into two camps: those who instantly "see" which number is bigger, and those who need to check. We worked for both. At first we compared quantities they could count and touch, then moved gradually to written numbers, with no concrete support.
The hands-on activities and games had a precise role here. When comparing happens inside a game, a child repeats the operation dozens of times in half an hour without feeling that they are drilling. And a mistake is no longer a red mark, just a turn lost and won back on the next round.
We also talked about the symbols and their classic confusion: which way the sign opens and why. The trick children hold on to most easily is that the sign always opens towards the larger number, as if it wanted to take in as much as possible. Once that clicks, it is never forgotten.
We make sure every child understands the basic mathematical ideas through experiences they live, not just through explanations they hear. Comparing numbers is one of those skills they then use daily, often without noticing: when ordering, when estimating, when checking whether an answer makes sense.
