Spring arrived at PlusKids full of colour and energy, and this week the children stepped into the world of nature: plants, insects and everything that brings things back to life after winter.
Through experiments, educational games and creative activities, the little ones discovered how plants grow, planted seeds they will now have to look after, and took a close look at the small creatures around us.
Planting a seed is one of the few school activities that does not end on the same day. You cannot hurry the result, you cannot repair anything if you have forgotten to water it two days running, and you cannot move on to something else until you have seen what comes up. For a child used to things happening quickly, that wait is a lesson in responsibility far more convincing than any conversation about responsibility.
Watching insects works in the opposite direction: it asks you to keep still and look closely, which is the very opposite of the usual pace of the day. Children begin to tell apart creatures that, until then, all looked the same to them — and with that, the way they treat them changes too.
Alongside this we worked on activities designed to build their self-confidence, their team spirit and their pleasure in learning through experience.
