We travelled back more than three hundred years, to the time of Isaac Newton — the scientist who changed the world starting, so the story goes, from an apple falling off a tree. The apple story does something no definition can: it makes gravity worth thinking about rather than merely worth learning.
The children found out what gravity is and how it anchors us to the Earth, why the planets do not fly off randomly through space but travel on fixed paths, and how Newton turned white light into a rainbow using a prism. We then explored how science is present in everything around us — from the GPS in a phone to telescopes.
The question that always comes up with this topic is why the Moon does not fall. The answer — that it is in fact falling all the time, but moving fast enough to keep missing the Earth — is exactly the kind of idea that stays.
Interactive activities help the little ones understand the world differently: through experiments, play and plenty of imagination.
