At PlusKids we use modern methods to build skills in maths and in Romanian, and the results are remarkable: the children are delighted with these approaches.
"Modern methods" does not mean, for us, abandoning practice. It means that practice reaches the child by a route they accept. A number-comparison game and a column of sums demand the same work, but the first gets finished and the second, very often, does not.
In maths we work a great deal with materials children can move, match and count, because abstract ideas only take root once they have had a concrete form. In Romanian the emphasis falls on comprehension and expression: we care not only whether a child can read a sentence, but whether they can say, in their own words, what they read.
Through interactive techniques and adapted resources, pupils are drawn in and build their skills creatively and enthusiastically. And when a child asks to do one more exercise, the method has done its job.
