Maths exploration: spatial positions

15 photos

A day of maths exploration given over to spatial positions, with exercises for developing spatial thinking.

We worked with the relations that describe where one object sits in relation to another: above and below, in front and behind, left and right. These are words children use every day but have never checked systematically — and that is where the confusions come from, especially with left and right, which shift with the position of whoever is looking.

We practised with objects the children could move themselves, because spatial thinking forms in the hands before it forms in the eyes.
