The Halloween party: a costume parade, games and a piñata

46 photos

Halloween is an eagerly awaited event for the little ones, and ours lasted two days.

Saturday's party opened with the costume parade. Skeletons, witches, bats, spiders and carved pumpkins livened up the room, along with games, team challenges, a piñata, sweets, a photo session and suitably spooky dancing. The parade is the part that matters most: each child gets a few minutes of everyone's attention, shows off their costume and says which character they are. For shy children it is the gentlest possible form of stage, because the attention goes to the costume rather than to them.

Today we carried the party on with the before- and after-school pupils, once all the homework was done, of course.

Although it is a celebration of frightening things, it brought a smile to the faces of all the brave children at PlusKids. And that is really its charm: fear that is played at, with rules, in a safe place and among friends, is the exact opposite of real fear. Children scare each other laughing and discover that something which looks terrifying loses its power the moment you take a good look at it.

Another event in true PlusKids style, full of fun and ease.
