With these lines we all pulled at the giant turnip. The story is short and has a structure children grasp at once: each tries in turn, nobody succeeds alone, and the result only comes when everyone pulls together.
We matched the story to the season, because the end of March brings the first early vegetables. The radish has the advantage of being one of the few vegetables a child can follow from seed to plate in a short time — and once they have pulled it out of the ground themselves, the usual refusal to taste something new vanishes by itself.
