Have you got your boots ready for Saint Nicholas? Today, once their homework was finished, the children at PlusKids got theirs ready.
We kept the usual order of the day: homework first, then the good part. That is not a rule invented for the holidays but the way we work all year — and that is exactly why it works. The child knows the enjoyable activity is not going anywhere, it simply comes once the job is done, and on days when there is something to look forward to, homework visibly gets finished faster.
Then we prepared the boots: cleaned them, polished them and set them out in plain sight. It is a simple custom, which the children carry out with a seriousness that is rather touching, because each of them wants theirs to look the best. Meanwhile we talked about Saint Nicholas, about who he was and why he is said to come at night, in secret, to children who have been good.
The loveliest part of the celebration is, as always, the waiting until the next morning.
