During green week, the children explored the world of plants and nature by sowing flowers and seeds.
We learned not only why planting matters but also what it does for us and for the environment. We talked about what a seed needs in order to start — soil, water, light, warmth — and about what happens if one of them is missing.
Planting is one of the few activities in which children cannot force the result. You can water more often, you can move the pot into the sun, but you cannot hurry a seed. It is exactly the kind of patience no explanation can convey: it is learned only by waiting. And meanwhile a very concrete form of responsibility appears, because the plant depends on someone remembering it every single day.
The second half of the lesson comes later, when the first green shoot appears. That is when the child makes the connection between what they put into the soil with their own hands and what they can see now, and ideas about the life cycle of plants need no diagram at all.
We also talked about what green spaces mean for the place we live in and why they are worth looking after — a conversation that goes rather differently after an hour spent with your hands in the earth.
