The first day of spring turned our thoughts to peace and quiet for everyone. That day we made special mărțișoare.
The mărțișor carried, that year, a weight it does not usually have. It is a small object, made by hand, given to someone you care about — which is to say the exact opposite of everything being heard around us then. Children need no long explanations to feel that; it is enough for them to know they are making something for someone.
At their age, hard things are handled differently than among adults: not through analysis but through gestures. A mărțișor carefully tied and given away says more than an hour of talking about what is happening in the world.
