In February 2023 we started completely free extra tutoring in Romanian and mathematics at the PlusKids premises, for children from reception through fourth grade.
The sessions were held on Sunday mornings, in small groups, and any child could join, whether or not they attended our after school. The small group is not an organisational detail but the very condition that makes the tutoring work: with four or five children, the teacher sees where each one gets stuck and can go back to precisely the missing step instead of moving on with the class.
In the first school years, most difficulties come not from a lack of effort but from a notion skipped at the right moment: carrying over that was never understood makes every subsequent addition feel impossible, and reading that still stumbles turns any word problem into an obstacle that has nothing to do with mathematics. Caught in time, such a gap is closed in a few sessions. Left alone, gaps accumulate.
That is why we wanted these hours to be free. A child who needs a little extra help should not depend on the family budget to get it — it is the simplest step we can take towards quality education for every child.
