We staged our own PlusKids film, as part of a learning approach built on personal and emotional development through educational workshops in general knowledge and handicraft.
The children were delighted to discover the history of cinema — the road from the first images that only moved if you spun something quickly to the films of today. It is a history well suited to their age because every step can be shown rather than merely described, and the trick behind each invention is simple enough to be understood on the spot.
Then we moved on to the practical part. Who acts, who films, who says when to start — it is all shared out, and the children discover that behind a few minutes of film lie a great many more minutes of preparation. That is precisely the lesson you miss when you only watch a finished film: nothing you see on screen happened first time.
We closed by watching a film with freshly made popcorn. After a day spent on the other side of the camera, a film looks different: the children start noticing how it was shot, not just what happens in it.
