At PlusKids, education always comes with a good dose of fun, and this week our little explorers uncovered the secrets of money.
Each child received a personalised card and, over the course of the week, collected coins, practising saving and managing resources. The system works because it brings time into the equation: the coins do not all arrive at once, and what you can buy on Friday depends on what you did from Monday onwards. For many of the children it is the first time they feel, concretely, the link between today's effort and tomorrow's possibility.
Friday brought the PlusKids fair, where the little ones could use the coins they had earned and saved to buy all sorts of things. Fair day is when the most is learned, even though it looks like nothing but a party. That is where the real decisions appear: do you buy the cheap thing now or wait for the expensive one, how do you split your money if you want two things, what do you do when your sums were wrong. And the regret that follows a hasty choice is, at their age, the finest teacher of financial education there is.
The good news was that the fair carried on through the summer as part of the regular programme.
