At PlusKids we learn and we have fun, and these days we explored the secrets of the calendar.
The children discovered why we have leap years, how many months a year has and how the calendar actually works. The leap year is one of the loveliest lessons at this age, because it answers a question the children did not know they had: where does an extra day come from, once every four years? The explanation — that the Earth does not go round the Sun in a round number of days, and that leftover quarter of a day has to be made up somehow — shows clearly that measuring time is not an arbitrary convention but an attempt to keep up with something real.
Then came the curiosities that fascinated them and helped them understand time better: why the months have different lengths, how weeks are counted and why they never fit the months perfectly.
On the Day of the Word "Thank you" we learned together how important that word is. We said "thank you" to one another and understood how expressing gratitude makes us kinder and closer. It is a more serious exercise than it looks: a child says "thank you" automatically, because that is what was asked of them; the next step is noticing for themselves when someone has done something for them — and that is where things change.
