At PlusKids, maths is made fun and interactive.
We use modern methods, with absorbing games, and encourage pupils to take an active part. The reason is simple: in maths, a child who only listens appears to understand right up to the moment they are asked to solve something alone. Active participation brings out early exactly where the thread broke, and a mistake caught in time costs far less than one caught in an exam.
Open discussion serves the same purpose. When a child explains to the others how they reached an answer, two good things happen: they put their own thinking in order, and the others hear an explanation in their own language, which sometimes lands better than ours. And anyone who has understood it wrongly hears themselves explaining it wrongly — and works it out for themselves.
Team projects add patience and negotiation: who does what, what happens when two children have two different methods, and what a result everyone contributed to looks like.
That is how we turn maths from a subject to be feared into an absorbing journey for every pupil.
