The lesson on fractions went well thanks to a visual approach.
The children quickly grasped what fractions are by matching pictures with the corresponding numbers. When we showed them a circle divided into equal parts, they saw at once that each part stands for a fraction — 1/4, 1/2 and so on.
The detail that makes all the difference is the word "equal". The commonest confusion at the start of fractions is not the symbol but the idea that any split into four pieces produces quarters. With the picture in front of them, the mistake corrects itself: you can see the pieces are not the same and therefore cannot carry the same name. No verbal explanation achieves that result as fast.
The picture proves useful a second time when it comes to comparisons. The question "which is more, a half or a third?" produces a wrong answer almost every time when handled as figures, because three is bigger than two. On a drawing, the answer is obvious, and the child corrects their own intuition — which sticks far better than a rule handed to them ready-made.
The visual approach helped them understand fractions not only in the abstract but also in practice, making the learning easier and more effective.
