At PlusKids, Romania's National Day is a wonderful occasion to celebrate together with our children.
On this special day we discover our traditions and values together. In the primary classes, 1 December is best explained through things that can be seen and touched: the colours of the flag and their order, folk costume, songs, the map of the country and the places the children already know because they have been there with their families.
We talked about what a national day means and why this particular date is celebrated, without loading the story with dates they cannot yet place in time. What stays at their age is not the chronology but the feeling of belonging to a place — and that is built from close, familiar details rather than from speeches.
A national day is also one of the few occasions when children hear the country talked about in a way other than on the news. We left room for their questions, which were, as usual, thoroughly practical: why exactly these colours, who chose them and whether they were always so.
Our little ones bring smiles and joy every day, and a celebration gives them one more reason.
