The first day of "Little scientists" week began exactly as a science week should: with curiosity and a great many questions.
We stepped into the world of the human body and talked about cells, about DNA and about how astonishing the construction of every living organism really is. These ideas sound large for their age, but they become approachable if you start from pictures the children already carry in their heads: cells are the "bricks" everything is made from, and DNA is the plan the whole building follows — the instructions that decide what colour their eyes will be or how fast their bones will grow.
The children discovered that these bricks are far too small to see with the naked eye, and that they multiply, replace one another and work together without us noticing a thing. Through interactive activities they explored scientific ideas pitched at their level, compared, grouped and tried to explain in their own words what they had just found out — the step where you can tell most clearly whether something has really been understood or merely memorised.
It was a day full of questions, discoveries and lovely work, just as it should be for little scientists. And the best part was that the questions did not end when the day did.
The adventure carried on the following week with a new theme, "Dream jobs", in which the children tried out, one by one, the jobs they like best.
