Checking addition and subtraction, understood by every child

13 photos

We had a wonderful activity at PlusKids: every child present managed to get a better grasp of how to check addition and subtraction, and their delight at discovering they could do it was priceless.

Checking your work looks like a formality, but it is in fact a turning point. Until then, a child finds out whether they have solved something correctly only when somebody tells them. Once they know how to check, verification belongs to them: they can find out for themselves whether the answer is right, find the mistake for themselves and redo the calculation without asking for confirmation. Maths stops depending on an adult's approval — and the confidence that comes with it shows immediately in the way they tackle the next exercise.

At PlusKids we do more than homework: we offer remedial activities and personalised support for every child, so that each of them can reach their potential. A child rarely falls behind because they "can't"; usually something was missed two lessons earlier, and everything since has been built on that gap. Calmly going back over the missing step solves, more often than not, more than ten extra exercises would.

All of this happens with confidence, motivation and a healthy growth in self-esteem. We are glad to see confident children, ready to push past their own limits.
