The PlusKids Summer School 2022 is drawing to a close. Every child who came through our door this summer full of experiences enjoyed themselves and learned alongside the others.
This week's "Harry Potter" theme showed us that magic exists, taught us what competition is and how to work as a team and, among other things, how to write a letter. Houses competing against one another are an excellent frame for competition at this age: points go to the team rather than the individual, so helping your teammate becomes the best strategy. Children who sulk when they lose at other games discover here that they lost or won together with others — and that is far easier to bear.
The letter had a well-chosen reason behind it too. When the envelope is delivered by an owl, handwriting stops being a chore and becomes part of the story: the opening formula is respected, the writing is legible, the letter is signed. We got a composition exercise that nobody experienced as homework.
Today the PlusKids team put on a magic show for the little ones, and the children learned a few tricks of their own. The best part came afterwards: a trick you know is the clearest proof that astonishing things usually have an explanation and a lot of practice behind them.
The last week of Summer School 2022 runs from 22 to 26 August, after which we get ready for our before and after school programme.
