Minecraft week: logic, strategy and a picnic to finish

Minecraft — education, not just play.

This week we turned the world of blocks into a setting for learning and exploration. We worked on consolidating what the children already knew, solved logic and strategy problems and invented games and challenges inspired by the Minecraft universe. On Friday we enjoyed a relaxed picnic, because balance matters as much as pace.

The theme was not chosen at random. Minecraft is already the language many children speak among themselves; when an exercise arrives dressed in something that belongs to them, the initial step of persuasion simply disappears. A building plan calls for measuring and counting, a strategy calls for thinking two moves ahead, and a challenge invented for your classmates has to be clear or nobody can solve it — which is exactly what we ask of a well-written problem statement.

The children learned without feeling they were "in class". They were involved, curious and engaged — and that shows at once, because an involved child asks more questions, not fewer.
