What great joy — Saint Nicholas has come.
The boots carefully prepared two days ago got their answer, and the morning started exactly as the children had hoped. For the little ones, Saint Nicholas is the first of the winter gift-bringers, and meeting him has something that is never quite repeated later: the pure joy of a promise being kept.
Beyond the sweets, the custom has a purpose the children discover for themselves. The boot is cleaned beforehand, put out in plain sight and left until the next morning — three small gestures through which a child learns that joy comes after preparation, not instead of it.
A lovely day, with wide eyes and a great many thank-yous said in chorus.
