Friday was the last day of green week at PlusKids, and the theme of the day was cutting down on food waste.
We had a good conversation about the ways we can reduce needless food consumption. The subject has one advantage: it can be checked immediately, on everyone's own plate. The children talked about portions taken too large in a hurry, about food forgotten in a school bag and about what can be done with what is left over. At their age, waste is not understood through a large, abstract figure but through a small example of one's own.
To put the ideas into practice, we made a fruit salad together. We used everything we cut, divided it into sensible portions and took exactly as much as we could eat. It is the simplest way of showing that "not wasting" does not mean "eating less" but "taking what you need".
And because the Easter holidays had just begun, we also ran a creative workshop for the occasion. The children worked away happily, and the workshop closed the week exactly as it should: with busy hands and thoughts already on the days off ahead.
A day about a healthy, responsible way of living, learned through concrete things rather than exhortations.
