Oceans, a day from the "Nature and the Animal Kingdom" week

During the "Nature and the Animal Kingdom" week, one of the days was given over to the oceans. The children set up a themed corner together — "The Underwater World" — with a reef backdrop, a life ring, an anchor and a globe on which they looked for water on the map. On the wall charts they gathered what they had learned about the world's oceans, from the Atlantic to the Antarctic.

The hands-on part happened outdoors, in the shade: worksheets to fill in and a fold-out booklet about the ocean that every child drew and wrote alone, from the first line down to the wave at the end. The day closed with games in the yard.

A habitat stays an abstract notion for as long as it is only read about. It turns concrete when a child builds it: choosing what goes on the chart, drawing the animals that live there, and deciding what deserves to be written in the few lines a booklet allows. That selection — what matters and what does not — is the real exercise, and it only shows once the child presents the work.
