The fourth week of Summer School took us underwater: the theme was "Under the sea", and the PlusKids team prepared a whole series of educational and entertaining activities for the children.
The marine world has an advantage few themes enjoy at this age: it is distant enough to feel like a story and real enough to deserve serious questions. The children arrive with what they already know from cartoons and books, and from there you can move on to new things effortlessly — because the interest is already there and does not have to be built.
As with every summer theme, we relied on activities in which the children work rather than merely listen. Good spirits were as much part of the programme as the information: a holiday day in which children laugh and move about stays in the mind quite differently from an hour spent sitting at a table.
At the end of the week, seven more themes still lay ahead, each with its own world. Summer at PlusKids is designed exactly that way: weeks that can be taken separately but which, put end to end, make up a journey.
