It was an unforgettable day at PlusKids: we explored the world of bees and the vital role they play in our ecosystem. Our thanks to Apis Queen for their support and generosity.
The children had the chance to see and touch honeycomb and cappings, discovering how the good things bees make possible are actually produced. It is exactly the kind of lesson no diagram can replace: the smell of wax, the weight of a comb in your hand and the hexagonal structure seen up close say more about bees than an hour of explanation. The children noticed for themselves that the cells are all identical and fit together perfectly, with no wasted space — a discovery about geometry made without anyone announcing it.
We then talked about the work of these small pollinating heroes and about what would happen to the orchards and gardens around us without them. We did not dramatise it: at their age, a simple, checkable link — no bees, no apples — works far better than a conversation about ecosystem collapse.
The day ended sweetly, with biscuits and fresh rapeseed honey from that year. And when the taste follows immediately after the explanation, the information attaches itself to a memory, which makes it much harder to forget.
We were left with a simple resolution, which the children put into words almost by themselves: to respect bees and to support them, because we depend on them more than it seems.
