Human body week: muscles, skeleton and internal organs

21 photos

Health is the most important thing we have, and caring for it is learned early, along with the basic notions about our body and its vital organs.

That is what we did during our week devoted to the human body: we learned about the muscular system, the human skeleton and the internal organs. Everything was explained warmly by the teachers, and the children consolidated what they had learned through hands-on activities.

The hands-on part is not a pleasant extra but the very condition of understanding at this age. A drawing of the bones of the hand stays a picture; the same drawing laid over your own hand, fingers bent so the joints show, becomes a discovery. The same goes for the heart: a number of beats per minute read from a book says nothing; felt in your own chest after running around the yard, it says everything.

At the end of the week, the children revised everything they had learned through a well-organised game of doctors. Role play is the best check we know: a child who has to explain to the "patient" what is wrong cannot hide what they did not understand, and the new terms surface naturally, in context, rather than as a list to memorise.
