In the second week of Summer School we explored the world of jobs.
The children got to see what doctors, firefighters, cooks, researchers and teachers do, discovering how varied and interesting these professions are. At their age a job means above all a costume and an object: the white coat, the helmet, the frying pan, the magnifying glass. That is precisely why we went beyond the picture and talked about what the person actually does on an ordinary day, what they had to learn first, and who benefits from their work. That turns the question from "what do you want to be" into "what do you like doing", and the second one carries much further.
Every week the children have interactive English lessons taught by a Cambridge teacher. Olga uses interactive methods, and even the youngest join in gladly and enthusiastically. It matters enormously that English should not be the "difficult" hour of the day: once it becomes the lesson they look forward to, the rest follows by itself.
At PlusKids we combine modern methods with traditional ones, to fit the learning process to each child's needs. We do not give up written exercises and repetition, because they are what makes things stick, but we set them in a context where the child has a reason to do them.
It is a joy to see how enthusiastic the little ones are and how much they enjoy these experiences.
