The third week of Summer School was given over to health education — a heading that sounds solemn but covers the most practical things a child can learn.
We began with the human life cycle and the important stages each of us goes through. It is a topic that helps children place themselves in a sequence: they were babies, they are children, they will be adults. Once the whole path is visible, the conversation about caring for your own body takes on a different meaning.
We carried on with the steps to a healthy life and the habits that keep us well, then with personal hygiene — how to keep our bodies clean and protected from illness. We dwelt on handwashing, because it is the gesture with the best ratio between effort required and illness avoided, and precisely for that reason it is worth repeating until it becomes automatic.
We talked about healthy teeth, with tips and tricks for proper oral hygiene, and about healthy eating, that is, about the importance of a balanced diet and nourishing food.
The final topic was first aid, through simple, practical lessons on how to react in an emergency. Our aim was not to turn the little ones into rescuers but to leave them with three things: do not panic, call an adult, say clearly what happened. That is enough at their age and is, in fact, the greatest help a child can give.
The children were very eager to take part, and we were delighted by their interest in health and wellbeing.
