The fifth week was a genuine adventure in the middle of nature.
Together we explored ecosystems and nature reserves, discovering the world of the ocean, the savannah, the desert and the forest. The children learned about different habitats and about why protecting nature matters. Comparing four such different environments is the most useful exercise in this topic: starting from the same questions — who lives here, what do they eat, why do they look like that — the children arrive on their own at the idea that every living thing suits its own place and cannot simply be moved elsewhere.
Then we went down beneath our feet. A delicious activity helped us understand the layers of the soil: we built a model out of biscuits, pudding and jellies, each layer with its own colour and texture. The edible model works because the child builds it, from the bottom up, in the right order. When the rock has to go at the bottom and the humus on top, the order can no longer be muddled — and the order of the layers was precisely what we wanted to stay.
It was a week full of learning and fun, and the children went home with plenty of new knowledge and fine memories. Next came the week devoted to road safety, with the rules that matter most for staying safe on the road.
