Week six brought art in all its forms to PlusKids.
We learned colour theory, met the great painters and looked at famous paintings. Miss Roxana delighted our ears with the saxophone and Miss Cristina with the flute, and we found out what sound is and how it is produced.
The moment with the instruments was by far the most convincing. A child who hears a saxophone from two metres away, rather than from a speaker, suddenly understands what vibration means: the air moves, it can be felt, and the sound has a source they can see. After that, the explanation about sound waves needs no effort of imagination at all.
Today we painted icons and learned about the great painter Gheorghe Tătărescu. Painting on wood asks for a different kind of patience than painting on paper — you work slowly, in layers, and haste shows. It is exactly the kind of exercise that shows children a beautiful piece of work means time, not miraculous talent.
We look forward to seeing the children in the weeks ahead: five more remain, full of surprises and things to learn, and from the autumn we welcome them to our after-school programme.
