The sixth week, "Road safety — accelerating towards knowledge", gave the children lessons they will use every single day.
We learned the road signs: how to recognise them and what each one means, so that the children know what they are looking at when they walk down the street. We dwelt on shapes and colours, because they already carry half the message — a round sign asks for something different from a triangular one, and that is easier to remember than a list.
We then practised crossing the road properly, through hands-on exercises. The rule children know best but apply worst is looking both ways: they can all recite it and very few do it without being reminded. That is why repeating it on the ground counts for more than any explanation.
We also discussed what to do in a construction zone, the dangers that appear there and the safety measures needed, and then personal protection in traffic and paying attention to everything happening around you.
The most eagerly awaited part was the interactive course, where the children put the rules into practice. A course has an advantage no diagram can offer: a mistake shows up immediately and can be corrected on the spot, without consequences. The experience did not only help them understand the rules, it also built attention, responsibility and critical thinking — because many traffic situations have no rehearsed answer and call for a decision made there and then.
